Isidor Karl Theodor Demant (* 1880 in Chernivtsi , Austria-Hungary , † 1953 in Cyprus ) was an Austrian civil servant, architect , painter and founder of the non-profit small settlement cooperative.

Live and act

Isidor Demant studied architecture in Vienna and then became an official at the State Railway Directorate in Linz . Due to his artistic nature, he retired early and worked as a freelance painter and architect. He also took part in archaeological excavations with Gabriel Welter as a draftsman for three years . With Paul Theer , he developed social housing projects in Linz in the 1930s in the form of urban outskirts , the so-called demant settlements . He founded the non-profit small settlement cooperative in Linz . This social project for unemployed people looking for a home was also funded by the state federal government.

After the National Socialists came to power in 1938, Demant, who had converted to Christianity, had to emigrate because he was of Jewish descent. After staying in several countries, he and his family settled in Cyprus, where he lived until his death in 1953.
