The Istituto Trentino di Cultura wanted after the founding of the University of Trento promote applied research and founded in 1973 the Italian-German Historical Institute ( Istituto storico italo-germanico ). The founding fathers were Paolo Prodi and Hubert Jedin . Until its closure, the Isig also had a religious research institute - the Istituto di Scienze Religose. Prodi (1973–1997) followed as directors Giorgio Cracco (1998–2005), Gian Enrico Rusconi (2005–2010) and Paolo Pombeni (2010–2016). Christoph Cornelißen has been director of the institute since February 2017 .

In 2007 the “Istituto Trentino di Cultura” was transferred to a foundation under private law, named after the Trentino politician and co-founder of the University of Bruno Kessler ( Fondazione Bruno Kessler ). The initiative to set up an institute for historical excellence research goes back to the initiative of Paolo Prodi, the head of the institute from its foundation until 1997. As a historian of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, Prodi had a meeting place in mind where the tradition of cultural exchange and The juxtaposition of the Latin and German worlds should find an ideal seat for reflection on the roots of an "idem sentire de re publica" (common ideas on public affairs) that had given shape to modern European culture.

The institute has recently undergone major changes. The team of historians was expanded to 13 employees following an international selection process.

For decades, the institute has organized a multi-day scientific conference ( Settimana di Studi / study week ) on a specific topic every year .

Since 1975, the results of the institute's scientific activities as well as research results from Italy and Germany have been published in the multilingual institute journal Annali dell'Istituto storico italo-germanico in Trento / yearbook of the Italian-German historical institute in Trento . Since 2011, the peer-reviewed journal has been republished twice a year: one number in Italian and one in German to familiarize readers with historical studies of the German and Italian-speaking regions without direct access to the other language. According to its self-description, the yearbook promotes “the contact between scientists and students of different generations and nationalities who deal with historical issues in a European and non-European context from the late Middle Ages to can range to contemporary history. "In addition, the institute are numerous serials out, including the Quaderni , the monograph , the Contributi / posts , typefaces and Fonti . Since the beginning of 2018 the institute has published the freely accessible online review magazine Annali.Recensioni.Online ; but since then the print magazine Annali has appeared without a review section. The electronic discussion organ, in which all contributions are subjected to a peer review, sees itself as an organ to promote the German-Italian scientific dialogue.
