Paolo Prodi
Paolo Prodi (born October 3, 1932 in Scandiano , † December 16, 2016 in Bologna ) was an Italian historian .
Paolo Prodi came from a long-established family in Reggio Emilia . He was born the third of nine children. His father was an engineer, his mother a teacher. His brothers included the politician Romano Prodi , the mathematician Giovanni Prodi and the physicist Vittorio Prodi .
Giuseppe Dossetti already had a great influence on him in his early years . With a scholarship he studied history, political science and social sciences at the Catholic University of Milan since 1950 . He finished his studies in 1954 with a laureate in history. From 1955 to 1960 he was an assistant volunteer in modern history at the University of Milan. In Paris in 1956 he got to know the new historical direction of the Annales . Through Dossetti he came into contact with the Marxist historian of ideas Delio Cantimori and the Catholic theologian Hubert Jedin . He spent a year with Jedin in Bonn in 1957/58 on a Humboldt fellowship . In 1960 Prodi acquired the libera docenza, which is comparable to the position of a private lecturer in German-speaking countries.
From 1962 to 1968 he taught at the University of Bologna as a professor of modern history. From 1968 he was professor straordinario (associate professor), from 1971 ordinario at the faculty in Bologna and in 1969 dean of this faculty. From 1970 to 1974 he was head of the Ufficio studi e programmazione . In 1972 he accepted a chair for modern history at the Sociological Faculty of the University of Trento . From 1973 to 1977 he was rector there. From 1977 to 1980 he was a modern historian at the Pedagogical Faculty of the University of Rome and from 1980 to 1983 at the Philosophical Faculty in Bologna. He was a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in 1978/79 . From 1983 to 1988 he held a chair at the University of Trento. Prodi was a co-founder and dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1985 to 1988. From 1988 to 2004 he held a chair in modern history at the University of Bologna.
In 1973 he founded the Istituto storico italo-germanico in Trento with Hubert Jedin . Until 1997 he remained director of the Italian-German historical institute. There was a close collaboration with Wolfgang Reinhard . With him he carried out the study week “Il concilio di Trento e il moderno” from 1995. He separated from the Democrazia Cristiana in 1992 because of their relationship with the Mafia. For 126 days he was a member of Parliament for La Rete in the Camera dei deputati .
Prodi's work on Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti was fundamental for research into the political relations between the city of Bologna and the Roman Curia in the 16th century . The two volumes of his study on the cardinal were published in 1959 and 1967. The two volumes formed the starting point for Prodi's groundbreaking studies on papacy and Catholicism in the post-Tridentine period . At the beginning of the Second Vatican Council in 1962 he brought out the anthology Concilium Oecumenicorum Decreta together with Giuseppe Alberigo , Pèriclés-Pierre Joannou and Claudio Leonardi . Prodi researched the “nationalization” of the papacy from the 15th to the 17th centuries on the basis of self-representation and theory, law and institutions, international politics and church affairs. According to Prodi's research, modern statehood and absolutism were implemented to a greater extent in the Papal States than in other contemporary communities.
Prodi was a research fellow at the Historical College in Munich in the college year 1990/1991. The colloquium held in July 1991 was devoted to formulas of loyalty, creeds and social disciplines between the Middle Ages and the modern era. In 1992 his main work Il sacramento del potere was published. Il giuramento politico nella storia costituzionale dell'occidente. The work was published in German translation in 1997 ( The Sacrament of Rule. The Political Oath in the Constitutional History of the Occident , 1997). A Trentino seminar cycle from 1993 followed up on Prodi's research on the oath and continued the interdisciplinary discussion. Prodi's work on the dual character of papal rule, like his work on the Bolognese reform bishop and Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti, was not translated into German, but his work on the development of European legal culture met with a diverse reception in Germany.
Prodi was an honored scientist because of his research. He became a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class abroad of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (since 1986), was a corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (since 2000), the Accademia delle Scienze di Vienna , the Ateneo Veneto , the Deputazione di storia patria per le Province di Romagna and the Giunta centrale per gli studi storici . He was awarded the Premio Bonavera dell'Accademia delle scienze di Torino, the Premio Chabod dell'Accademia dei Lincei, the Premio AC Jemolo per la storia del diritto canonico and the Humboldt Research Prize (2007). He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic ( Grande Ufficiale , 1975), the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1992) and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art (1994).
