Vittorio Prodi (born May 19, 1937 in Reggio nell'Emilia ) is an Italian physicist and politician ( PD ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 . He is one of the six brothers (and eight siblings) of Romano Prodi .

Career

In 1959, Prodi graduated in physics from the University of Bologna . From 1970 he worked here as a freelance lecturer for nuclear measurements, and he also taught at various other Italian and international institutes. In 1983 Prodi became an associate professor in the physics department in Bologna . He has authored several publications and holds five international patents .

From 1986 to 1992 Prodi was chairman of the Catholic Action in Bologna. In 1992 he began to be politically active and was President of the Province of Bologna from 1995 to 2004 . In the 2004 European elections , Prodi was elected to the European Parliament as a representative of the centrist La Margherita party. Here he joined the group ALDE , which all member parties of the European Democratic Party included, which also includes La Margherita counted. Among other things, he was Vice-President of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change , which Parliament had from 2004 to 2009.

In 2007 La Margherita merged with the newly founded Partito Democratico (PD), to which Prodi also transferred. In the European elections in Italy in 2009 he won another mandate and now joined the social democratic group S&D together with the other PD MPs . He is currently a member of Parliament's Environment Committee .
