Gherardo Ortalli

Gherardo Ortalli (born September 21, 1943 in Fidenza ) is an Italian historian. He was Professor of Medieval History at the University of Venice and has retired since 2015.

Life

Ortalli received his Laureate from the University of Bologna in 1967. After his military service, he worked at the University of Ferrara from 1971, where he headed the Istituto di Storia e Geografia . In 1973 he was appointed to the Università Ca 'Foscari in Venice, where he taught medieval history. In 1980 he became full professor and headed the Istituto (later Dipartimento) di Studi storici at the Ateneo veneziano from 1980 to 1989. From 1996 to 1999 he coordinated the Dottorato in storia sociale europea , which connected the universities of Bologna, Padua, Trento and Trieste in addition to Venice .

Ortalli was Socio des Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti from 1994, Socio effettivo from 2000, then from 2003 to 2009 member of the Consiglio di presidenza as administrator and later as Segretario della Classe di Scienze Morali , finally its president. He is also a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences as well as of the Hrvatska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti , the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts . Ortalli became president of the Deputazione di Storia Patria per le Venezie , and is also a member of the Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati , the Società di Studi Romagnoli, the Società Dalmata di Storia Patria and other scientific organizations. In France he was Directeur d'Etudes Associé a la Maison des Sciences de l'Homme and the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris (1989–1990). He was also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche in Treviso , for which he also chairs the jury for the award of the Premio Gaetano Cozzi for studies on the history of the game.

Ortalli primarily dealt with the history of institutions, then with the history of culture and mentality, but also with the relationship between man and nature, especially the relationship with the wolf. His focus was on the history of the Republic of Venice , and in particular on the historiography and chronicle of the Middle Ages.

Gherardo Ortalli is co-editor of the Corpus statutario delle Venezie , he founded and directs the Pacta Veneta series , he is co-founder and director of Ludica magazine , which deals with the field of gaming, then co-director of the Studi veneti and Profili and Ludica series . In addition, he is director of the Archivio Veneto and sits on various journal managements, such as the Argentine Temas Medievales , the Journal of History: academic reports published in Moscow , the Bullettino dell'Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo . He is also a member of the executive committee of the Istituto Storico Italiano per il Medio Evo . He is also the coordinator of the Italian-French-German project to edit the registers of the Venetian Senate, published by the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti , of which 14 volumes have now been published.
