Isla Conejo is a 2.4 hectare , uninhabited island in the Gulf of Fonseca on the Pacific coast of Central America . Countries bordering the Gulf are Honduras , El Salvador and Nicaragua . Isla Conejo, one of a good 30 islands in the Gulf, is about 1 km off the south coast of Honduras.
history
In the judgment of the Central American Court of March 9, 1917, the waters and islands in the Gulf of Fonseca were awarded to the state of El Salvador . On September 11, 1992, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague overturned this judgment and granted Honduras possession of the islands. Since 1993, Honduras has stationed a military unit on Isla Conejo, which hoists or lowers the national flag every day.
However, El Salvador continues to claim ownership and rely on a border treaty that was signed in Guatemala City on April 9, 1938 . In this treaty, Honduras renounced the islands in the Gulf of Fonseca.
Current situation
Since 2012, the number of cases in which the governments of Honduras and El Salvador accuse each other of crossing borders and violating fishing rights has been growing.
In September 2013, the Hondurans celebrated the 192nd anniversary of independence from Spain with a ceremony on the island. El Salvador thereupon condemned the "military and de facto illegal occupation" by Honduras and called for the immediate "evacuation of the island" in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon . On the other hand, Honduras feels provoked by the fact that the Salvadoran government in Chile has ordered ten Cessna A-37 B Dragonfly aircraft.
