The Isla Mayor or Isla del Barón (dt .: Big Island, Island of the Baron) is a Spanish island and a volcanic cone of Volcanes del Campo de Cartagena middle of the Mar Menor , on the territory of the municipality of San Javier in the Región de Murcia . With 93.8 hectares, it is the largest island in the Mar Menor.
geography
The island is located in the middle of the Mar Menor, between Isla Perdiguera and La Manga . It emerged from a small stratovolcano and consists of a heavily eroded crater, the tip of which can still be clearly seen. There are also three other small volcanic cones on the roughly oval island. In the north it is more flattened, while in the south the landscape is more shaped by volcanism and has several craters, some of which are submerged in the water. The hunting lodge ( la casa del barón ) with a historic tower is located in this area . The island reaches a height of 104 m above sea level .
history
The island was part of the Royal Spanish Hunting Reserves . In 1870 King Amadeus I gave it to his friend Baron von Benifayó as a retreat for him and his lover, a Russian princess. The island is still privately owned today. The baron had a hunting lodge built in Neomudejar style.
nature
The island has a unique grove of dwarf palms (palmitos) and is home to a numerous and species-rich bird population.
In 1986, a small group was Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia, arruis / muflones del Atlas) exposed, resulting in a process with the Environmental Protection Agency Consejería de Medio Ambiente de la Región de Murcia led. The island is now protected as one of the Espacios abiertos e islas del Mar Menor under nature park categories and the Birds Protection Directive (ZEPA).
Rental
The island can be rented as a vacation home. There is a manager couple (Andy & Jan Patty), several cottages in the Moorish style, and the ability in the hunting lodge or in the historic tower with living room and bedroom five levels and beautiful 360 degree view of the island and the Secas Bay to stay.
