Isla Mollarri ( also called Isla Malla Arria in the Basque Country ) is a tiny rocky island in the Spanish municipality of Zarauz in the province of Guipúzcoa .

Mollarri lies in the Atlantic directly in front of the rocky coast of the Costa Vasca ; the island is uninhabited.

history

From 1906 to 1923, cargo ships were loaded with minerals via the island's loading point. The reconstruction of Mollarri's old mineral loading dock offers an interesting excursion into Zarautz's industrial past . In 1906, the Mollarri loading dock was built to ship all of the ore extracted in the Asteasu mines . Iron ore was transported to the coast in wagons over an 11-kilometer route, which was then transported to the loading point on the island of Mollarri via a cable car supported on 112 pillars. The cargo ship loading was closed in 1923, among other things because of the bad weather conditions and the berth conditions.
