Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines
The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines ( IRISL ) is the state shipping company of Iran . Its fleet comprises 170 ocean-going vessels (April 2015), even if the ships of various subsidiaries (Khazar Shipping, Valfajr, etc.) are included. 6,000 seafarers work for the IRISL.
history
In view of the increasing imports into Iran since the early 1960s, the first national shipping company, the Aria Shipping Line , was founded in August 1967 . Aria Shipping started with two small ships for regional services and four ocean-going vessels ( Aria Sep , Aria Far , Aria Naz and Aria Gaam ). At the end of 1978 there were already 42 ships with a total capacity of 525,000 DWT .
After the Islamic Revolution and the resulting political changes, Aria Shipping was renamed Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) on January 5, 1979 and assigned to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The seat of the public company is in Tehran .
During the First Gulf War , some ships (including Aria Boom , Aria Jahan , Aria Shaad , Aria Omid ) were total casualties due to missile attacks. This created a difficult economic situation for IRISL. From then on, all ships were named after martyrs and cities, each preceded by “Iran”.
