The Isola dei Pescatori (German: Fischerinsel ), also called Isola Superiore (German: Upper Island ), is one of the Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore . Located in the municipality of Stresa , it is the only island in the lake that has been permanently inhabited since the beginning of the 14th century.
location and size
The elongated island extends with a length of about 350 m from northwest to southeast and is about 100 m wide at the widest point. The 3.4 hectare area is built on in the southeast with the fishing village. An old avenue characterizes the north-west of the island. The port is located on the south bank of the island. There the fishermen have moorings for their boats, some of which are protected by a high stone wall. There are also the jetties for water taxis and passenger ships. Isola dei Pescatori still had 208 inhabitants in 1971, but only 57 at the last census (2001).
Economy and tourism
The inhabitants live from fishing and tourism. Several restaurants and souvenir stands are open during the season. At the Lido in the north-west you can also picnic, play boccia or swim in Lake Maggiore.
Attractions
The most striking building on the island is the parish church, which is dedicated to St. Viktor (San Vittore). The multi-storey houses have characteristic long balconies, on the railings of which the fish is traditionally dried. The harbor entrance is protected by a life-size statue of the praying Madonna .
Events
Every year on August 15th ( Ferragosto ) a procession with the statue of the patron saint moves around the islands on a boat, which is accompanied by numerous tourists and locals swimming.
