Israel Scheffler
Israel Scheffler (born November 25, 1923 - † February 16, 2014 ) was an American educationalist and philosopher at Harvard University .
Scheffler earned a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology from Brooklyn College . In 1952 he received his doctorate with Nelson Goodman at the University of Pennsylvania with the thesis On quotation . In the same year he got a job at Harvard University, where he spent his entire scientific career. From 1964 he was there Victor S. Thomas Professor of Education and Philosophy . In 1992, Scheffler retired, but still founded and directed the Philosophy of Education Research Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education .
Israel Scheffler dealt primarily with the philosophy of language , symbolism , the philosophy of science and the philosophy of education . He has authored numerous books and treatises, with a recurring theme being the "Philosophy of Education".
In 1971 Scheffler was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He holds an Honorary Doctorate (DHL) from the Jewish Theological Seminary and was a founding member of the National Academy of Education and President of the Philosophy of Science Association and the Charles S. Peirce Society .
Scheffler was married and had two children.
