Israel Singer

Israel Singer (born July 29, 1942 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American political scientist. From 2001 to 2007 he was General Secretary of the World Jewish Congress (WJC).

Life

Israel Singer grew up as the son of Austrian refugees in Brooklyn. He taught political science at the University of New York and from 1969 to 1971 political theories at the Political Institute of Bar Ilan University in Israel .

As chairman of the World Jewish Restitution Organization, he conducted negotiations to support Holocaust survivors and fought for the legacies of Holocaust victims around the world. He also negotiated with Germany and Austria over pensions and compensation for survivors.

In October 2001 he was appointed chairman of the World Jewish Congress (WJC). In 2002 he was elected President of the "Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany", the " Jewish Claims Conference ". In June 2002 he was appointed chairman of the IJCIC (International Jewish Committee for Interreligous Consaltations).

On March 14, 2007, Singer was removed from office by the President of the WJC Edgar M. Bronfman . Bronfman accused Singer of years of misappropriating funds from the WJC. Bronfman also had to resign a little later.
