The Istituto Italiano di Numismatica is a non-university research institute in Italy for numismatics . The institute is based in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome .

history

Several Italian numismatists , including university professors, founded a private numismatic society in Rome in 1912. As part of a reform of historical research institutes, this was converted into a public law institution called Istituto Italiano di Numismatica by a legal decree of February 3, 1936 . With four other research institutes it was subordinated to the Central Committee for Historical Studies ( Giunta centrale per gli studi storici ) .

From 1946 to 1972, the numismatic institute kept the large coin collection of the king and numismatist Viktor Emanuel III, who died in exile . on. Since then, the collection bequeathed to the Italian state has been in the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo alle Terme) .

The Istituto Numismatico Italiano founded the Centro internazionale di studi numismatici in 1965 with the Commission internationale de numismatique and the Museo Filangeri in Naples . The institute became a member of various international associations, including the Unione internazionale degli istituti di archeologia, storia e storia dell'arte in Roma .

management

The governing body of the institute consists of the presidents of the research institutes of the Giunta centrale per gli studi storici , the president of the Istituto Nazionale di Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte and two experts appointed by the Minister for Cultural Property .

activities

The institute maintains a specialist library and a photo library . It organizes congresses, meetings and seminars. It published the professional journal Atti e Memorie , which was replaced in 1954 by the Annali dell'Istituto Italiano di Numismatica . There are also various conference volumes .
