Major Roman trunk roads in Hispania

The Itinerarium Antonini (completely Itinerarium provinciarum Antonini Augusti ) is a directory of the most important Roman imperial roads , which also gives place names of Roman settlements. Its basic form probably originated at the beginning of the 3rd century (the Antoninus named in the title is Emperor Caracalla ), the handwritten version was handed down towards the end of the century under Diocletian .

According to current research, the Antonini Itinerarium comprises 17 travel routes (Latin Iter = path) through the Roman Empire , to which there are also numerous side streets. The composition is very heterogeneous in detail. At least it seems clear that all the streets listed are to be understood as viae publicae . The Itinerarium Antonini is responsible for numerous important information about many Roman settlement names, even if some information is imprecise. In contrast to the Tabula Peutingeriana , the Antonini Itinerarium does not contain any map- like representations.

A list of shipping routes known as the Itinerarium Antonini Augusti maritimum has come down to us with the street directory.
