With the Papal Bull Iubilaeum Maximum of May 26, 1949 , Pope Pius XII proclaimed . the holy year 1950, he set the beginning for Christmas 1949 and the end for Christmas 1950.

Goal of the jubilee year

The Pope stated that the main task of the Jubilee was not only to call Christians to atonement for guilt and to repent, but also to encourage virtue and a holy life. The Pope proclaimed a complete indulgence from the punishments of sin ( plenissimam totius poenae indulgentiam ) and laid down the conditions for the religious-liturgical nature. He spoke of his wish that in the Holy Year "there should be a general return of all to Christ ".

Indulgence rules

One of the prerequisites for obtaining the perfect indulgence is the visit of the four main basilicas in Rome , these include: St. John Lateran , St. Peter's Basilica , St. Paul Outside the Walls and Santa Maria Maggiore .

As indulgence prayers, the Pope ordered three prayers of the “ Our Father ”, the “ Ave Maria ” combined with the “Glory to the Father ( Gloria patri)” and the addition “I believe”.
