Iuliopolis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iuliopolis was an ancient city in Galatia , today a field of ruins near the Sarılar Köprüsü, 22 km southwest of Beypazarı ( Turkey ).

The ancient village of Gordiu kome was raised to the status of a city in Augustan times under the name of Iuliopolis ( Strabo 12, 8, 9). According to Pliny , Naturalis Historia 5, 143 the place was a civitas in Bithynia , but in the border area with Galatia.

It owes its importance to its location on the important connecting road from Byzantion via Nikaia to Ankyra and further east.

The city has been a bishopric since 314. Today it is still the titular bishopric of the Catholic Church.

The localization is ensured by the discovery of milestones; Otherwise, however, only sparse remains of fortifications and other buildings are visible.
