Ivan Horák (molecular biologist)

Ivan Horák (born March 22, 1942 in Polička , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , † May 30, 2009 in Berlin ) was a Czech-German molecular biologist .

Life

After completing his medical degree, he conducted research in the field of biochemistry in Prague . In 1968 he moved to the Federal Republic of Germany via Romania. With a grant from the German Research Foundation , he worked at the Institute for Virology in Würzburg . Research stays in the USA followed (in Baltimore and at Harvard University ). In 1980 he completed his habilitation with studies on the control mechanisms of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells using the model of virus-infected cells . He was then appointed professor of immunobiology in Würzburg in 1983 , which he taught for 14 years. From 1998 he worked at the Faculty of Human Medicine at the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital at the Free University of Berlin , from 2003 until his retirement in 2007 as Professor of Experimental Medicine and Pathobiology at the Charité in Berlin. At the same time he was head of the Molecular Genetics Department at the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology. In this field he achieved international recognition as a university lecturer and scientist, which was also reflected in numerous articles in specialist journals.

Horák died as a result of an accident. He found his final resting place in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
