Ivan Smith

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ivan Smith is a British mathematician who studies symplectic topology and how it interacts with algebraic geometry, low-dimensional topology and dynamics. He is a professor at Cambridge University .

Life

Smith studied at Oxford University , where he received his doctorate under Simon Donaldson in 1999 ( Symplectic Geometry of Lefschetz Fibrations ). He is in Cambridge at Gonville & Caius College.

Among other things, Smith derived node invariants from symplectic geometry.

In 2007 he received the Whitehead Prize for his work in symplectic topology (highlighting the breadth of the techniques used in algebraic geometry and topology) and the Adams Prize in 2013 .
