Ivan Romanovich Tarkhanov
Iwan Romanowitsch Tarchanow , Russian Иван Романович Тарханов , English transcription Ivan Tarkhanov, (born June 15, 1846 in Tbilisi ; † September 6, 1908 in Nawojowa Góra near Cracow ) was a Georgian-Russian physiologist.
Tarchanow came from the Georgian aristocratic family Tarchan-Moravi (Tarkhan-Mouravi) and carried the title of prince. Other name variants are Tarchanoff, IR Tarkhnishvili, IR Tarkhan-Mouravi and Ivan Ramazovich Tarkhanov. The Georgian national hero Giorgi Saakadze (around 1570 to 1629, Grand Mouravi, also Didi Mouravi) was one of his ancestors .
Tarchanow studied at the University of Saint Petersburg in 1863/64, had to leave it because of political activities and instead studied at the Medical-Surgical Academy in Saint Petersburg, graduating in 1869. In 1871 he defended his doctorate and visited important scientists in Germany for two years (Strasbourg, Leipzig, Berlin, Heidelberg), London, Vienna, Paris and Zurich. Among his teachers were the physiologists Filipp Wassiljewitsch Ovsjannikow and Ivan Michailowitsch Setschenow . Tarkhanov taught at the Medical and Surgical Academy in Saint Petersburg from 1875 to 1895, initially as a private lecturer, from 1875 as an associate professor and from 1877 as a professor. There he headed the physiology laboratory. His departure in 1895 was forced because he was considered too liberal and the academy was under the military. Then he was a private lecturer at the University of Saint Petersburg until 1901. The last years of his life he lived in Poland near his former student and friend Napoleon Tsybulski (1854-1919) near Krakow.
He researched the central nervous system, sleep, hypnosis, secretion and discovered the psychogalvanic skin reaction . He was interested in the influence of the environment on the organism and in questions of social medicine. Early on he studied the effects of X-rays on living organisms.
On September 30, 1888, he was elected a member ( matriculation no. 2736 ) of the Leopoldina .
