Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov
Ivan Sechenov ( Russian Иван Михайлович Сеченов , scientific. Transliteration Ivan Michajlovič Sečenov * 1 . Jul / 13. August 1829 greg. In Tjoply Stan , Government Simbirsk (now Setschenowo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ); † 2 jul. / 15 November 1905 greg. In Moscow ) was a Russian physiologist .
Life
Ivan Setschenow graduated from the Russian Army Military Engineering School in Saint Petersburg in 1848 . He studied medicine at Moscow University from 1850 to 1856 . He then worked abroad from 1856 to 1860: in Berlin with Johannes Müller , Emil du Bois-Reymond and Hermann von Helmholtz , in Leipzig with Felix Hoppe-Seyler and others, and in Vienna with Carl Ludwig , and later with Claude Bernard in Paris . Setschenow received his doctorate in Saint Petersburg in 1860, where he then taught physiology at the Medical-Surgical Academy. He completed his habilitation in 1861 and was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1869 . Setschenow was professor in Odessa from 1870 , in Saint Petersburg from 1876 and in Moscow from 1888 .
Ivan Setschenow is one of the founders of the Russian School of Physiology. His main research area was neurophysiology . He was the first to notice the reflex-inhibiting effect of certain brain centers (reflex theory) and is considered the founder of objective psychology . Setschenow also provided work on blood gas analysis and electrophysiology . His theory of reflexes was further developed by his student Ivan Petrovich Pavlov .
Honors
His place of birth since 1945, today's First State Medical Setschenow University in Moscow since 1955 , the lunar crater Sechenov since 1970 and the asteroid (5234) Sechenov since 1989 (each according to the English transcription of the name) are named after Setschenow .
