Ivan Buresch

Ivan Jossifow Buresch ( Bulgarian Иван Йосифов Буреш ; * December 15, 1885 in Sofia ; † August 8, 1980 ibid) was a Bulgarian zoologist .

Life

Buresch studied in Sofia and Prague . In 1914 he founded the National Natural History Museum of Bulgaria . He was a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and headed the zoological institute of the academy from 1947 to 1959.

He is considered a pioneer in the study of the fauna of Bulgaria. He made 23 initial descriptions of animal species. One focus of his work was the research of insects, but amphibians, parasites and cave fauna were also research areas. He dealt with ecological issues and also the history of natural sciences in Bulgaria.
