Ivan Ivanovich Smirnov
Iwan Iwanowitsch Smirnow ( Russian Иван Иванович Смирнов ; * 1898 ; † 1967 ) was a Soviet communist , prisoner in Buchenwald concentration camp , resistance fighter against National Socialism and head of the Soviet military section of the International Camp Committee (ILK).
Life
Smirnov joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). He was trained as an officer in the Red Army and took part in the Great Patriotic War against the German Empire . After his capture, he was interned in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1943 and assigned to the typhus experimental station as a nurse . Here he took part in the prisoner resistance. In the winter of 1944 he was one of the organizers in setting up a military brigade in the small camp .
When the Nazi regime was eliminated, he returned to his homeland as an invalid .
