J A Q

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The JAQ (Jimi U - Albert Mair Quintet) is a jazz quintet operating in Austria . It has existed for 30 years with hardly any changes. Founding members are the singer Jimi U from the USA (Pittsburgh) and the Viennese Albert Mair on piano.

Band history

The first line-up consisted of Jimi U / vocals, Albert Mair / piano, Martin Fuss / saxophone / flute, Johannes Strasser / bass and the unfortunately deceased Karl Prosenik on drums. In the same year, the bass was replaced with Heinz Jäger. The band existed with this line-up for more years. After a short interlude from Walter Grassmann, Klaus Göhr has been playing drums in the J · A · Q · since then.

In 1999, on the occasion of the Christmas CD, the singer Carole Alston was hired for two songs. She integrated the musicians' enthusiasm and the success of this CD into the ensemble for more than nine years (J · A · Q · plus). Currently the band is back in the quintet formation.

In 2003 the instrumentalists of the J · A · Q · together with Richard Oesterreicher (harmonica), Paul Fields (violin), Peter Valentin (vocals) and Klaus Schulz, who died in 2016, founded the Ensemble Wiener as "G'schichtl Drucker (anecdotes narrator)" Standards . Here the attempt is made to interpret Viennese music in the style of the US jazz standards .
