The Green Cross Association is an Austrian charitable organization in the field of agriculture, forestry and hunting.

The association was founded by Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria-Tuscany in 1905.

In addition to the support that the association grants to people in need in the above-mentioned areas, the association also carries out nature conservation activities, such as the promotion of wildlife research projects.

Hunter ball

While the association is not so well represented in public, its hunter's ball or the Green Cross Association's ball , which has been held in Vienna from the start, is one of the highlights of the Vienna ball season .

The ball was organized for the first time by Alexander Prince von Solms-Braunfels in the Vienna Hotel InterCont in the year it was founded - with the aim of supporting hunters in need and their families. The ball still forms the financial basis for the charitable purpose of the Green Cross.

The Jägerball differs from the other traditional Viennese balls not least in that, according to the dress code, women and men should appear in traditional costume . The patronage of the ball is taken over annually by the individual federal states on a rotating basis.

In 2011 the 90th ball took place in the Hofburg including the redoute halls and attracted around 6,000 visitors. The state of Carinthia had patronage. In 2014 between 50 (police information) and 100 (organizers) protesters against the Jägerball gathered in front of the Hofburg. Five members of the Verein gegen Tierfabriken were attacked with butyric acid by a "known man" according to the police .
