The Jórvík Viking Center is an archaeological museum in the center of York , England .
The museum is named after Jórvík , the Viking name of York. The purpose of the museum is the vivid reconstruction of the everyday life of the Vikings in the Viking city. In particular, the concept of the time machine, which led into the history of this period, had around 14 million visitors by 2006.
The museum, which opened in April 1984, emerged from the Coppergate excavations carried out in 1979–1981 and is supported by the York Archaeological Trust , founded in 1982 . In 2001 the museum was reorganized.
