József Karai

József Karai (born November 8, 1927 in Budapest ; † September 7, 2013 ) was a Hungarian composer .

biography

Karai began his musical training relatively late at the age of 12. After the Second World War , he first worked as a worker in an electricity company in Budapest. From 1948 he directed several choirs in Budapest and began to compose choral literature. Since 1969 he has worked as a freelance composer who continued to focus on choral music.

Karai is considered to be one of the innovators of the choral sound, making use of aleatoric music, among other things .

One of his best known compositions is the much-sung motet De profundis (Psalm 130) from 1981.
