There are documented three Jewish cemeteries in Vilnius , the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . There is only one Jewish cemetery left . The other two were destroyed.

  • The oldest and largest Jewish cemetery was established in the 15th century in the suburb of Šnipiškės (now: Žirmūnai ) on the opposite bank of the Neris River . It was closed in 1831 under the rule of the Tsars . In 1949/50 the cemetery was destroyed by the Soviets for the construction of the Žalgiris stadium . ... the centuries-old Jewish cemetery [was] rolled flat. His tombstones were used for the construction of parks and public buildings. Those who bend down frequently today and look very closely will still be able to see the outlines of Hebrew letters even on the sidewalks of the city. In 1971, the Vilnius Sports Palace was built right in the middle of the former cemetery.
  • The second cemetery was in Užupis . It was used from 1828 to 1943 (or 1948). In the 1960s it was also destroyed by the Soviets. Tombstones from the two old cemeteries were used for stone stairs of various designs throughout the city. Currently, a monument marks the place where the entrance to the cemetery used to be. In addition, there are plans to build a monument on the site of the old cemetery in Užupis.
  • The New Jewish Cemetery was established in the Šeškinė area near the Sudervė Cemetery . Some graves of famous people, u. a. that of the Gaon of Vilna , were transferred to the new place before the old cemeteries were destroyed. There are currently 6,500 Jewish grave sites in the new cemetery.
