Jewish community of Étain
A Jewish community in Étain in the Meuse department in the French region of Lorraine has existed since the 18th century; today only the synagogue and the Jewish cemetery are evidence of its existence.
history
Jews are attested in Étain since 1754. At the beginning of the 19th century there were already 65 Jewish citizens who lived mainly from the horse, cattle and grain trade. The Jewish community of Étain was the oldest Jewish community in the Meuse department and the second largest in the 19th century.
National Socialist Persecution
During the Second World War , the synagogue was used as a horse stable by the German troops and desecrated. A large part of the Jewish community was deported and murdered.
