Vaucouleurs Jewish community

A Jewish community in Vaucouleurs in the Meuse department in the French region of Lorraine existed since the early 19th century.

history

As in other parts of the Vosges , the number of members of the Jewish community peaked in the mid-19th century. Therefore the Jewish community of Vaucouleurs was able to build its own synagogue in 1860 .

The Jewish families played a major role in the economic development of the place. B. the shirt factory Seligmann.

National Socialist Persecution

The part of the Jewish community that was unable to escape or go into hiding in time was deported and murdered from 1942 to 1944 . Those arrested first came to the camp in Ecrouves (near Toul ) and were taken to Auschwitz via the Drancy assembly camp and killed there.

The small Jewish cemetery in Vaucouleurs is the only reminder of the once thriving Jewish community.
