Jewish cemetery (Stadthagen)
The Jewish cemetery Stadthagen is a Jewish cemetery in the Lower Saxony district town of Stadthagen in the Schaumburg district . There are 75 gravestones in the 830 square meter cemetery on the corner of Seilerstrasse and Parkstrasse.
history
The cemetery was laid out around 1822 as a replacement for an old cemetery that had been occupied since 1597 and was located "on the wall". In this old cemetery no stones were allowed to be placed on the graves, as the wall was also used by the citizens for walking and "Christian" eyes should not be offended.
After the Second World War , repair work was carried out on the cemetery in 1955/56, 1985 and 1994. Since 1960 it has been owned by the State Association of Jewish Communities of Lower Saxony . The city has been responsible for maintaining the cemetery since 1974.
In 1956 and 1975 tombstones were knocked over or damaged in the cemetery. In the 21st century, new graves were dug in the Jewish cemetery for the first time in over 60 years.
