Vechta Jewish cemetery

The Jewish cemetery Vechta is a historical Jewish cemetery in the district town of Vechta in Lower Saxony . It is the only Jewish cemetery in the Vechta district .

The cemetery , on which there are 26 tombstones , is located on Visbeker Damm. The cemetery was probably laid out in the 18th century; it was first mentioned in 1809/10 on a card entry as "Juden-Kirchhof". The first recorded burial took place in 1835, the last in 1936. The oldest surviving tombstone dates from 1837.

It was devastated on the occasion of the November pogroms in 1938 ; gravestones were knocked over and the hedge destroyed.

In 1948 the cemetery was restored by order of the military government. Women from the prison in Vechta were also used for this purpose.

In 1952 the cemetery was given to the Jewish Trust Corporation . In 1960 it was transferred to the regional association of the Jewish communities of Lower Saxony , which still looks after it today.
