history

There is different information about the time when this Jewish community cemetery was built . The year of the first burial is often given as 1869 and the last as 1936. A memorial stone bears the following inscription:

JEWISH CEMETERY
BURIAL PLACE OF THE EARLIER
JEWISH CULTURAL COMMUNITY BORK-SELM
OF THAT STILL EXISTING 38
GRAVE STONES WITH TLW. HEBREW
INSCRIPTIONS DATE THE ELDER
FROM 1864
THE LAST FUNERALS HAVE ON-
FOUND IN THE BEGINNING OF THE 30'S

In 2006 there were 40 tombstones ( mazewot ). Based on the identifiable grave inscriptions, the last burial took place in 1934. The cemetery is laid out in a T-shape. In the upper part there are the burials from the 19th century . There is a path between the left and right cemetery. From the 20th century, the deceased were buried there. In contrast to the upper part, the two younger fields are densely overgrown with ivy . Apart from the missing gravestones in the right field, this cemetery is apparently full. The two old tombstones (front right) do not match the occupancy of this cemetery. According to the death registers, 39 people died from 1822 to 1863. Less the two existing tombstones, 37 grave sites are missing. In 1959 the cemetery was still in a desolate state. In 2002 he was desecrated. The cemetery is regularly maintained by the Selm municipal utility .

Individual tombstones

  • There is a gravestone from 1864. It belongs to Therese Alexander. She was born on July 2, 1787 and died on January 25, 1864. She is probably identical with Trine Abraham, wife of Herz Goldberg, who died on February 25, 1864.
  • To the right of the entrance are two head-high tombstones with only Hebrew grave inscriptions. One of them belongs to Sara Alexander, who died on April 26, 1835. Mrs. Alexander was the widow of Melcher Moyses and the daughter of Alexander Süss ben Abraham. She was born in 1739. However, converting the Hebrew date results in a death date of April 1, 1835.
  • Moritz Wollenberger died on November 16, 1934. He was born on November 25, 1877.
