Jewish cemetery (Deggendorf)
The Jewish cemetery in Deggendorf , a town in Lower Bavaria , was established in 1945.
The Jewish citizens who lived in Deggendorf from the middle of the 19th century until the Nazi era belonged to the Straubing Jewish community and were buried there in the Jewish cemetery .
From 1945 to 1949 there was a Jewish community in Deggendorf, which was composed of so-called displaced persons , survivors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp (up to around 1500 people). The Jews who died during this time were buried in a section of the communal cemetery, which was separated from the rest of the cemetery by a hedge.
In 1989 a memorial plaque was put up. The inscription reads: “In honor and in memory of the Jewish fellow citizens who died here in Deggendorf as a result of inhumane treatment in the Theresienstadt concentration camp”.
