Castro from Santa Trega

The reconstructed Castro of Santa Trega ( spanish Santa Tecla ) is an archaeological site of Monte de Santa Tecla, south of A Guarda ( Spanish La Guardia ) in the province of Pontevedra , above the mouth of the Rio Miño , the border with Portugal is, in southwest Galicia in Spain .

The Castro or Chafurdão belongs to the Celtic Castro culture widespread in Galicia and is one of the most visited Galician castros. It was discovered in 1913 when an expressway was being built. Round buildings are predominant, but there are also oval and square ones, the latter with Roman influence. In 1931 it was declared a National Monument.

On the mountain can be seen petroglyphs that are about 2,000 years older than the fort, which, according to the results of the excavation by Antonio de la Peña Santos in the 1980s, was built between the 1st century BC. It was in use in the 1st century AD after the Romanization of Galicia began. Then a lengthy process of abandonment began, which was interrupted in the late Roman period by sporadic occupations. The hill has been used since the 6th century BC. Populated by Celts. The system preserved in the ground plans was partially reconstructed. Finds from the excavation can be viewed in the small museum.
