The Jewish cemetery Henry is located in the district of Henry the Thuringian town of Suhl .

history

After 1708 Jews were given the right to settle in Heinrichs, a Jewish community was established there . In 1720 there were seven families registered. In 1811 there were 17 Jewish families living in the village. In 1834 the community counted 109 people in 27 families, in 1899 there were only three Jewish families. The community laid out a Jewish cemetery in 1720. It was expanded in 1861. From 1903 only the Jewish cemetery in Suhl was used. Nevertheless, the couple Max and Jette Stern were buried here in 1931 and 1932 respectively. In 1982 the cemetery was placed under monument protection.

Location and characterization

The cemetery is located in a forest, about one kilometer south, about 100 meters above Heinrichs, at the end of the path Am Schießgrund , in the corridor An der Haardt . On an area of ​​10 ares there are still 70 traditional tombstones ( Mazewa ) without borders with inscriptions in Hebrew script on the east side and 85 younger stones in different shapes with borders and additional German inscription on the west side. The gravestones consist mainly of red sandstone and shell limestone . Eleven tombstones are surrounded by a wrought iron grille. The cemetery is divided into two larger grave fields, each with several rows. Moses Simson and his wife Louise rest in a double grave in the cemetery .
