Overview of the cemetery area

The Jewish cemetery in Nordhorn at Bentheimer Straße 184 with 62 graves from 1864 to 1937 and 1945 is a reminder of former Jewish citizens of the district town with only 36 gravestones due to the destruction during the Nazi era . It is a listed building .

There was also an older Jewish cemetery , located at Bentheimer Straße 261, with graves from the 17th century to 1864, which was destroyed in 1937.

The older Jewish cemetery in Nordhorn was laid out on Bentheimer Strasse in the 17th century. It was occupied until 1864 and existed until the Nazi era . In 1937 a petrol station was built on the site; today there is a car dealership there.

As early as 1864, the still partially preserved, newer cemetery was laid out around 200 meters into town from the old cemetery. It was occupied from 1864 to 1937 and 1945. There were a total of 62 graves there; due to destruction during the Nazi era, only 36 gravestones remained.

In 2012 the cemetery received a newly designed gate system. Based on contemporary designs in other Jewish cemeteries, sandstone steles were erected that hold two iron gate wings with seven golden stars of David .

The New Jewish Cemetery is listed as a structural and cultural monument in the list of monuments of the state of Lower Saxony for the city of Nordhorn. The owner is the Lower Saxony State Association of Jewish Communities.
