The Jewish cemetery in Vlotho

The Jewish cemetery Vlotho in Vlotho in the Herford district in North Rhine-Westphalia is a protected architectural monument .

description

The Jewish cemetery with its 185 graves and 163 preserved tombstones ( Mazewot ) is located on the waterway directly opposite the Protestant (now municipal) cemetery and was occupied from 1854 to 1940. It is also known as the new Jewish cemetery.

Until 1854 the Jews in Vlotho had to bury their dead on the so-called Jüdenbrink outside the city on today's Oberg. Only a few traces of this old 17th century cemetery have survived; the last 10 tombstones preserved were moved to the new cemetery in 1967.

The Vlotho cemetery also served as a burial place for the Jews from Bad Oeynhausen , as they belonged to the Vlotho synagogue community.

In the cemetery there is a memorial erected in 1969, consisting of three upright memorial stones. Two of the stones bear the names of the 41 Vlotho Holocaust victims. Another stone bears the inscription in Hebrew and German: "PEACE BE WITH YOU" and "YOU WERE CITIZENS OF THE CITY VLOTHO".
