The Jewish Cemetery in Sopot ( Cmentarz żydowski w Sopocie ) is located in Sopot ( Sopot ), a city in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship . It was created in 1913. The Jewish cemetery is a protected cultural monument and is 0.5 hectares in size.

history

The seaside resort on the Baltic Sea had a rapid boom in the 19th century and was particularly popular with Jewish bathers from West Prussia and Poland. Since 1860, Jewish residents can be found who joined the community in Neustadt in West Prussia (today Wejherowo ) . In 1910, 86 Jews lived in the city, their number had more than doubled in 15 years. They founded their own congregation in 1912 and laid out the cemetery on Groß Katzerstraße in 1913, and construction of the Roonstraße synagogue began at the same time .

Opposite the cemetery were the Protestant and Catholic cemeteries, which later passed into the hands of the city.

The cemetery was officially closed in 1948, became overgrown and metal objects fell victim to looting. In 1983 it was placed under protection and restored until 1989.

Status

Only a few tombstones still have legible inscriptions today. In addition to Hebrew, they are written in German, Polish or Russian, since Sopot and Danzig were transit points for many emigrants to America. The entrance portal with the Hebrew inscription " Ze Szaar L'Adonaj " (The Gate to God) is the only one preserved in the entire Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The cemetery is now located at 32 Malczewskiego Street.
