The Jewish Esther Rachel and Ida Kamiński Theater in Warsaw ( Polish Teatr Żydowski im. Estery Racheli i Idy Kamińskich w Warszawie ) is a stage that puts on plays in the Yiddish language .
history
The theater was created around 1950 from a merger of two Jewish theaters in Wroclaw and Łódź , which were active at the time , was nationalized and has been operating in Warsaw since 1955 . The theater bears the names of the Jewish actresses from the Kamiński family of actors: Esther Rachel Kamińska (1870–1925) and her daughter Ida Kamińska (1899–1980). Ida Kamińska directed the theater until the March 1968 riots in Poland , then left Poland and lived alternately in the USA and Israel . The theater was directed from 1968 to 1969 by Juliusz Berger (1928–1999), from 1970 to 2013 Szymon Szurmiej (1923–2014), and since 2014 Szurmiej's wife Golda Tencer (* 1949). The actors in the theater included u. a. Hans-Joachim Recknitz and Abraham Morewski .
The performances in Yiddish are simultaneously translated into Polish and can be heard in earphones. The repertoire of the theater includes a. Pieces by Abraham Goldfaden , Mendele Moicher Sforim , Scholem Alejchem , Jizchok Leib Perez and Jakob Gordin .
Theater building
The theater building on Grzybowski Square was built between 1966 and 1967 based on a design by the architect Władysław Jotkiewicz based on a concept by Professor Bohdan Pniewski .
Although declared a monument by the Polish Association of Architects, the building was demolished in 2017 to make way for a modern high-rise building with theater rooms on the ground floor. The site is currently used as a parking lot.
