His research interests extend to research on historical linguistics and language change of Romance languages, here on the role of Writing and the language change happening, the language policy in Romansh countries, the development of standard language varieties of Romance languages, including in the Canadian province of Quebec and the Republic of Moldova . Another focus is on research on Francophonie , the linguistic conditions and language practice of Francophone minorities in Canada and other regions. In addition to the French language, the phenomena of multilingualism and migration, which Erfurt addressed in several case studies in Germany, Canada, France and the Republic of Moldova, are central to these studies.
