Jürgen Gburek (born March 29, 1967 in Linnich ) is a German correspondence chess player and "Honored International Master" (Senior International Correspondence Chess Master, SIM for short).

Correspondence chess

In 1986 Gburek played his first promotion tournament of the 1st class with the German Correspondence Chess Federation (BdF). In each case at the first attempt, he was promoted to the main tournament and later to the master class.

Due to his studies and work, Gburek was hardly active after that and only reported back in 2000 with the participation in an international master class tournament in correspondence chess. Here, with 8 points from 10 games, he easily took 1st place and thus acquired a semi-final qualification for the ICCF World Chess Championship.

In the following years Gburek was active at the German E-Mail Chess Club (DESC) for several years. There he won various tournaments. Among other things, he finished 2nd in the single player league in the 2008/09 season and won the title in the 2009/10 season.

At the same time, Gburek took part in a semifinal tournament of the 33rd ICCF World Chess Championship. There he missed the qualification for the candidates tournament with third place, but was able to achieve the first norm for the IM and SIM titles.

In 2010, Gburek took part in an ICCF Grand Masters standard tournament. He remained undefeated and scored 7 points from 12 games, the second norm for the IM and SIM titles.

In autumn 2012, he was also awarded at the ICCF Congress in Pretoria, both the title of "International Correspondence Chess Master" (IM) than that of a "Senior International Correspondence Chess Master" (SIM), the latter between the International Master and Grandmaster to settle is.

In the summer of 2013 Gburek was nominated by the German Correspondence Chess Federation (BdF) for the "Berlin Invitational Section A", an invitation tournament of the US correspondence chess federation with numerous titleholders. In the final ranking of the tournament that ended in December 2015, Gburek took second place in the table with 8.5 points from 14 games (+3 = 11 −0).

In 2015 and 2016, Gburek received an invitation from the respective organizing German Correspondence Chess Federation (BdF) for the tournaments "Germany Advanced Masters 01" and "Germany Advanced Masters 02-A", both of which were category 11 tournaments he won the first place, which was shared five times.

On January 1, 2016, Gburek was appointed by the ICCF to join the group of top players who are allowed to act as adjudicators of game results.

In 2017 the German Correspondence Chess Federation (BdF) nominated Gburek for the "Chess-Medical" tournament organized by the Polish Correspondence Chess Federation, a world championship held for the first time, albeit an unofficial one, exclusively for medical professionals. Here he finished undefeated in shared 3rd place.

His rating in correspondence chess is 2496 (as of July 1, 2019).

Gburek was active in the Aachen-Cologne area for various clubs, including the Chess Association Übach-Palenberg in 1934, the Chess Association Alsdorf in 1928 and the Chess Friends Longerich in 1956.

In the early 1990s he played with Alsdorf for several years in the West League of the Middle Rhine Chess Association.

Since 2014 Gburek has been playing again for the Übach-Palenberg chess association, which is based in the Aachen Chess Association.

Jürgen Gburek studied medicine at the University of Cologne . Today he works as a specialist in anesthesiology , in Bedburg's position since July 2018 .
