from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Kalwa (born December 13, 1952 in Kierspe ) is a German journalist and book author.

Life

After graduating from high school, Jürgen Kalwa began working as a local editor in South Westphalia and has lived - after working in Berlin and Munich - as a freelance journalist in New York and West Cornwall / Connecticut since 1989. His articles and radio broadcasts, with a focus on sports and culture, appear regularly in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , the Schweizer Illustrierte and are broadcast by Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

In addition, Kalwa wrote a number of non-fiction books in which, among other things, the peculiarities of American sport are described. They include comprehensive presentations of the sports of baseball , basketball and football and biographies of professional golfer Tiger Woods (1998) and former NBA player Dirk Nowitzki (2019).

The focus of his work concerns the critical examination of topics that were previously underrepresented in sports journalism, such as the commercial structures of sport, fraud activities such as doping , corruption, betting fraud and the socio-political dimensions that become visible through the sexual abuse of athletes and the political statements of dark-skinned athletes, as well the criminal and civil law issues raised in litigation. The result of this occupation was, among other things, the book "Nothing but the truth - the Lance Armstrong case and the coming to terms with one of the biggest fraud scandals in sport" (2019).

Since 2015 Kalwa, who in the same year played Friedrich Rosen in the film “Letters from Baghdad” as an actor in front of the camera, has also been working as a speaker for audio books.
