Jürgen Klein (soccer player)

Jürgen Klein (born December 22, 1949 in Wiehl - Marienhagen , † October 29, 2006 in Wiehl) was a German football player .

The defender played in his youth and at the beginning of his senior career at VfR Marienhagen . On the occasion of a friendly game in 1971 a Wiehler city selection against FC Schalke 04 he had to play against "Stan" Libuda , who could not get past Klein in this game. Coach Ivica Horvat immediately offered the talent a contract and on November 11, 1972 Klein made his first Bundesliga appearance.

Klein stayed with the Gelsenkirchen team for two years, where he played 27 Bundesliga games and made 5 appearances in cups. For the 1974/75 season he moved to DJK Gütersloh in the 2nd Bundesliga. After two years the club was relegated, but Klein stayed and came to a total of 57 second division appearances, in which he scored four goals. However, a serious leg injury ended his high-class football career. Although he appeared again in the 1977/78 season for the national division VfL Gummersbach , but could not build on his previous good performances.

So he returned to VfR Marienhagen and became a player-coach from 1983/84. He held this position for several years before finally retiring from active sport.

In the summer of 2006, Klein fell into a coma from which he never woke up.
