Marienhagen is a village in the city of Wiehl in the Oberbergischer Kreis in the administrative district of Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Location and description

The place is about 4 km northeast of the center of Wiehl at the intersection of Kreisstraße 52 and Landesstraße 145. The neighboring villages are Alferzhagen and Merkausen . Marienhagen is north of the federal motorway 4 .

history

In 1257, Count Heinrich III. von Sayn, landlord of Marienhagen, gladly gave permission to build a Johanniskloster here.

The local history is closely connected with the religious order of St. John, founded in 1113 . With the consent and support of secular lords, a commander in Marienhagen was founded in the middle of the 14th century from Herrenstrunden. The Cologne church donated long, forest-covered strips of land on the northern slopes of the streams around Marienhagen. The knowledge of the Johanniter in soil cultivation promised an economic and cultural revitalization of the then still quite barren and inhospitable area. As a sideline for people living in poor conditions, the friars taught them the skills of weaving blankets; in addition, they devoted themselves to fish farming , especially in the neighboring Alpine valley near Koppelweide .

In 1330 the Ville Marienhagen was granted market rights; Admittedly, the market town remained only of local importance as a trading and distribution center for the surrounding farms.

The heyday of the religious house lasted until the 16th century, the influence of which extended into the Aggertal and far into the area of today's parish Reichshof. In 1569 the Marienhagen branch was given up.

In the land tax list of 1555 Zu mergenhaiche is listed . In 1580, 13 Bergische subjects as well as the Commenthur Her Heinrich were named in the Homburg lordship for the town of Mergenhaenn in the fodder oat note ( Komtur = knight of the order, according to another reading the pastor is meant).

1879 from the quarterly report of the mayor of Wiehl:

“In particular, with reference to the High Circular Disposal of April 16 c, I take the liberty to report obediently that there are no longer any distilleries in my district. On the other hand, brandy wine consumption takes place to a large extent in the Marienhagen school community, which results from the employment of most young people as pavers and masons. In the village of Marienhagen alone there are 6 farms that go far beyond the need, I would gladly welcome it if the proposed legislation offered means to partially suppress them. Since then I have not noticed that distilleries outside of Germany are carrying loads of their products behind them and doing domestic trade with them. I would take strict action against it. "

In 1980 the 650th anniversary was celebrated with a medieval farmers market, folk processions and traditional demonstrations. The backes (village bakery) was restored and put into operation.

In the nationwide competition " Our village should become more beautiful ", Marienhagen became the 1971 national winner (Golddorf).

At the 675th return of market rights in 2005, the place appeared, u. a. back to the Middle Ages with a folk pageant.

church

The Evangelical Church in the town center is one despite its simple design of the medieval buildings in this country; the massive west tower dates from the 13th century.

Around 1300, after the dilapidated old chapel was demolished , the Order of St. John added a new nave in the early Gothic style.

When the Reformation around Marienhagen began, the room layout was changed. A carved beam gives the year 1630.

A decisive change resulted in the parish in 1604 through the Siegburg Treaty. This set new fixed boundaries between the "Homburg" and "Windeck". They were put together and essentially still exist today, even if the districts of Gummersbach and Waldbröl have long since merged into the Oberberg district.

Through this demarcation the parish of Marienhagen was cut up. The small western part fell into the Homburg region, while the remaining parts east of the new border (from Oberderschlag via Alpe, Freckhausen and Sotterbach to Biberstein) were assigned to the Windeck district and thus to the Eckenhagen parish. All petitions from the representatives of the Aggerhöfe, in which they asked to be allowed to stay with Marienhagen, were rejected. But they persistently pursued their goal. In 1886 the Royal Consistory of Koblenz ordered the localities of Freckhausen , Merkausen , Seifen , Mühlenschlade, Ohlhagen , Hütte, Marienhagener Mühle and Ahe , belonging to the parish of Eckenhagen and located in the municipality of Denklingen , to unite with the parish of Marienhagen.

The church is called dialect , even if it belongs to the colorful kerken, not "kerke", but "colorful church" (also called "Johanniter church"). Inside, early Gothic frescoes, which were whitewashed during the Calvinist Reformation period in the 17th century, were not rediscovered until 1907 during construction work. The Bunte Kerke in Marienhagen is part of the "Open Churches" campaign in the Rhineland.

The square around the church served as a cemetery for centuries. After 1912 it was converted into a facility.
