Jānis Vagris

Jānis Vagris ( Russian Яанис Яанович Вагрис, Janis Janowitsch Vagris ; born October 17, 1930 in Nauditēs Pagasts , Latvia ) is a former Latvian- Soviet politician . From October 4, 1988 to April 7, 1991, he was First Secretary of the Communist Party of Latvia , the sub-organization of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in the Latvian SSR .

Life

In 1958 Vagris became a member of the CPSU. From 1985 to 1988 he was chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR and on October 4, 1988 he took over the post of First Secretary of the Latvian Communist Party from Boris Pugo . He remained in office until April 7, 1990 and was replaced by Alfred Rubiks .

Awards

He received the three-star medal in 2010 .
