The hospital was named after James Jenkins Dossen (1866-1924), a Liberian politician and vice president. The building complex was built in 1958 by a German construction company and inaugurated in 1960. The hospital has approximately 90 beds and has been the only health care center in Maryland County since the end of the Civil War and the last operating hospital in eastern Liberia. The hospital building is in dire need of renovation, the working conditions and requirements are extreme due to the lack of material requirements, the facility is also under-staffed, there are only a few local doctors, technicians, nurses and trained nurses. The medical staff has been supported since 2002 by the aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières and its Liberian branch Merlin Liberia .
