The Journal of Medicinal Chemistry , abbreviated J. Med.Chem. , is a journal of the science of medicinal chemistry published by the American Chemical Society . The original title was Journal of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and was shortened to today's title in 1963. The magazine's founder and its first editor-in-chief was Alfred Burger from 1959 to 1971 inclusive . Philip Portoghese ran the magazine for the next forty years. At the beginning of 2012, Gunda Georg and Shaomeng Wang took over the editorial office.

The impact factor in 2014 was 5.447. According to the statistics of the ISI Web of Knowledge , the journal with this impact factor ranks third out of 59 journals in the medicinal chemistry category.

In 2010 the branch ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters was founded.
