Alfred Burger (chemist)

Alfred Burger (born September 6, 1905 in Vienna ; † December 30, 2000 ) was an American chemist of Austrian descent. He was the founder and first editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry . Burger's main focus is medicinal chemistry , especially the mode of action, the chemical structure and the abuse of medication and drugs .

Life

Burger grew up in Vienna. He studied and received his doctorate at the University of Vienna at Ernst Späth in specialist chemistry . He then conducted research in Switzerland before emigrating to the USA in 1928. From 1929 he worked there initially as a research assistant at the University of Virginia . He spent his entire professional life there. After initially purely laboratory work and research from 1929 to 1938, he later also worked in teaching. From 1938 he was assistant professor for a year , then associate professor until 1952 and finally full professor from 1952 . In 1970 he retired .

On August 1, 1936, he married the American Frances Page Morrison, who soon gave birth to a daughter. In 1937, Burger received US citizenship .

Burger was involved in the development of drugs to combat malaria and tuberculosis , among other things , and contributed to the further development of chemotherapy . He was awarded the Pasteur Medal for his research and was made an honorary doctorate from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia .

The American Chemical Society , of which he is a member, has been presenting the Alfred Burger Award named after him since 1980 in collaboration with the GlaxoSmithKline company . During his academic career, Burger published nine books and over 200 articles in professional journals.

He founded the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry in 1958 and remained its editor-in-chief until 1971.
