The J / 24 is a sporty keelboat with good gliding properties. It is used in the leisure sector, but above all internationally as a small regatta yacht. Due to the high prevalence, world and continental championships are also sailed.
history
When Rodney S. Johnstone wanted to build a fast, easy-to-sail boat for his children in 1976, only his garage was available to him as a shipyard. Nevertheless, on May 15, 1976, he launched his first hand-built J / 24, the "RAGTIME", the size of his American garage.
The first sailing season with the new boat was such a great success that Johnstone commissioned them to build a mold for series production. The boat with the hull number 2 was completed in March 1977. The demand was so great that in 1978 a class association was formed. In 1981 the J / 24 was declared an international class by the IYRU (now ISAF ).
Today the J / 24 with around 5,500 boats is one of the largest keelboat one-design classes in the world and is represented on almost every continent.
Every year continental and world championships are sailed and almost every outstanding sailor has some successes in the J / 24 class on his résumé.
