JDownloader (abbreviation for Java Downloader ) is a download manager written in Java , which was primarily developed for automated downloading from sharehosters . In addition, the program enables videos to be downloaded from video portals such as B. YouTube . The software mostly works independently through the websites of the providers - right up to the start of the loading process.

The software is published under the GNU General Public License , but it violates its definitions because not all parts of the program are available as source code . The developers therefore announced in 2008 that they would switch to a different license. This step has not yet been taken.

Functions

The core function of the software are specially developed scripts which enable JDownloader to deal with websites. The scripts are divided into the categories of hosters and decrypters . The former enable automated downloading from various share hosts; the latter search websites for corresponding download links . Some scripts can handle CAPTCHA codes independently using text recognition, others can at least conveniently display them to the user so that he can enter the solution. All scripts have in common that they can become inoperable if the design of the associated website is changed, as they strictly work according to a movement pattern. For this reason, JDownloader has a modular structure. Each script is saved in its own file, which can be exchanged using the integrated automatic update.

In the JDownloader user interface , the links are bundled and sorted into packages. Since many sharehosters only allow files with a size of a few hundred megabytes, larger files have to be split up (usually using packing programs ), which then results in several links. The packages can later be given specific settings separately, for example archives can be automatically unpacked after a successful loading process. Most sharehosters only allow users who have not purchased paid access to their offer a single loading process in a given period of time. JDownloader can circumvent this measure by automatically disconnecting and restoring the Internet connection via the implemented reconnect function (such as " reconnect "). Due to the new IP address assigned by the Internet service provider , the sharehoster can no longer recognize the user and the restriction becomes ineffective. However, this procedure only works with dynamic addressing in which the IP address actually changes after the connection is disconnected. However, such measures are not necessary for the paid premium access of many sharehosters, which is also supported by JDownloader.

Download Link Container

Along with JDownloader, the developers also introduced the DLC file format. These are container files in which download links are stored in encrypted form. In order to be able to retrieve these, JDownloader connects to a central server from which the necessary keys are received. The purpose of this measure is, on the one hand, to be able to pass on and download many individual links bundled in a single file, on the other hand, copyright violations etc. cannot be reported easily because the user never gets to see the decrypted links. This procedure was already practiced before, for example by CryptLoad and RSD , whose encryption methods were discovered and published some time ago. The same thing has now happened to DLC. However, unlike CCF and RSDF containers, the DLC architecture allowed developers to make exposed keys ineffective. However, this has the consequence that the respective client to which this key belonged can no longer open any DLC files at all. After these events, the developers announced the successor DLC2, which was scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2009. In contrast to its predecessor, the source text of DLC2 should be fully visible.

financing

JDownloader is free as free software for users. In 2010 there was a fundraising campaign in which every donor from Germany with a donation of at least 18 euros and every donor from the European Union with a donation of at least 20 euros received a T-shirt with the JDownloader logo.

Since 2012 the installation files have included a web installer from the InstallCore.com platform, which can be used to install additional programs in addition to the JDownloader ( adware ). Several users reported in the summer of 2013 that some of these programs were malware and spyware . Browser plugins are also installed and the browser is closed without prior request. It was also complained that the programs were installed even though users had previously unchecked the consent to the installation. According to the developers, users receive different programs during installation that are selected based on their location. A program was then removed from the distribution list by the developers. One possibility to bypass the advertising programs is to download the current version as a zip file without an installation program; there are “clean installers” for the preliminary version.

A paid version is planned for the future, which will contain additional functions and should be free of advertising programs ( freemium ).

legal action

In 2013, the company behind JDownloader, Appwork, was sued by ProSiebenSat.1 Media . The background to this was the function of the software for extracting streams from its own video platform. The district court of Hamburg ruled in favor of ProSiebenSat.1 and found that JDownloader bypasses a technical measure against the saving of the streams, which is inadmissible under copyright law.

Appwork was forced to remove the function with an injunction. In a statement on the official website, the company discussed that a developer from the open source community had implemented a function to bypass the RTMPE process in a beta version of the program. Appwork also announced that it would challenge the judgment to clarify whether the provider of an open source software was obliged to immediately control all changes made by all developers involved. On November 29, 2013, the Hamburg Regional Court ruled that Appwork's managing director could be held liable for illegal functions of the software.
